A mechanical drive is a mechanism for transmitting power from the motor (prime mover) to the working portion of the machine. The process is accompanied by a change in velocities and torques and sometimes in the nature of the motion

The element which transmits power is called the driving element, and the element which receives it is known as the driven element. The transmission of power from the driving element to the driven one involves a loss of power in overcoming harmful resistances

The magnitude of this loss is estimated by the efficiency n of the drive; it is expressed as the radio of the power N on the driven element to the powern on the driving element
